Key takeaways
- 1.There is no single best AI employee for a small business, only a best one per job. Markty AI is the marketing team, Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work are the general assistants, Fin by Intercom handles support, and Artisan Ava and Devin cover outbound sales and engineering.
- 2. Markty AI is first because marketing is the function most small businesses leave to nobody. It plans, writes, designs, publishes and measures on a flat bill from $45 a month, but it does nothing outside marketing, and general agents cover far more surface.
- 3. The cheapest way to get a capable general AI employee is a plan you may already pay for: Claude Cowork comes with Claude Pro at $20 a month, and ChatGPT Work is rolling out to paid ChatGPT plans from Plus at $20 a month.
- 4. Sintra is the cheapest bundle of role helpers at a reported promotional $15.60 a month on a 12-month term, with 12 named helpers and 250 monthly credits. Its helpers are used mainly through chat, per Sintras site, and credits are not comparable units across products.
- 5. Grok Bot, Artisan Ava and Devin are real AI employees with narrow fits: Grok Bot needs a Cursor or SuperGrok plan and shares one cloud computer across bots, Artisan is quote-based and only worth it with outbound volume, and Devin is an engineering hire.
The best AI employee for a small business depends on the job: Markty AI for marketing, Claude Cowork or ChatGPT Work for general operations, Fin by Intercom for customer support, Lindy for custom Slack agents, Sintra for the cheapest bundle of role helpers, Zapier Agents for automation, Grok Bot for always-on agents, Artisan's Ava for outbound sales, and Devin for software engineering. No single product covers every function well, so this list ranks by fit for the job and says where each one falls short.
Disclosure: Markty AI publishes this blog and appears in this ranking. We rank ourselves where we believe the evidence supports it and say plainly where a competitor is the better choice.
What is an AI employee, and what is it not?
An AI employee is role-specialised AI staff that does a defined job, rather than a tool that helps a person do it. A scheduler holds posts you wrote; an AI social media employee plans the calendar, writes the posts and publishes them. A general agent takes a goal and works across your files and tools.
What it is not: a person, a replacement for judgement, or something to hand logins to without boundaries. The distinction between specialised employees and general agents is set out in our guide to AI employees and autonomous agents.
How we ranked these ten
We organised the list by job, then ranked by fit for a small business: printed pricing, no engineering, and doing rather than chatting. Marketing comes first because it is the function most small businesses leave to nobody. The general agents cover far more surface than Markty does. 11x's Alice, reported at $36,000 a year and upward, is out of range. Prices verified 11 to 13 September 2026 at the vendor's pricing page, except where marked reported.
1. Markty AI: the marketing team
Markty AI is a team of role-specialised AI employees for marketing: social media, graphic design, SEO and GEO, email, and e-commerce sales. They plan the calendar, write posts and articles, design visuals, publish to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Reddit, run email and manage the Google Business Profile.
The Senior package runs from $45 a month for 1,000 credits to $179 for 5,000, for one brand and one seat. The Manager package starts at $200 a month for 6,000 credits, adds the AI Visibility engine (weekly scans across six AI answer engines) and starts at three seats and three brands. Flat monthly bill, no contract, no free trial; rungs are on the pricing page.
It is only the marketing pick: no support agent, no sales calls, no code, no publishing to X, TikTok, YouTube or Threads. General agents cover more surface. Buy it if marketing is the function nobody owns and you want to know whether AI engines name you, your AI visibility.
2. Claude Cowork: the general operations assistant
Claude Cowork is included with every paid Claude plan: Pro at $20 a month ($17 on annual billing), Max from $100 a month, Team seats from $20 a month on annual billing. The free plan does not include it. In Anthropic's words, "Give it a goal, and it works across your files and tools." Connectors cover Microsoft 365, Google Drive and Slack, and scheduled tasks "run unattended" with no device online.
Where it beats Markty: everything outside marketing. Anthropic said business operations and content creation were its largest uses. Where it falls short: no marketing knowledge, no content calendar, no Instagram or LinkedIn publishing, no AI visibility measurement, and you direct each task. Buy it if you already pay for Claude. Not tested hands-on; the claims are Anthropic's.
3. ChatGPT Work: general agent, finished artefacts
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's agent inside ChatGPT, announced on 9 July 2026 according to reports. OpenAI says it can "create finished materials like sheets, slides, docs, and web apps, and stay with complex projects for hours by breaking them into smaller steps and completing them independently." It comes with ChatGPT plans, on web and mobile from Plus upward and in the desktop app on every plan including Free: Plus at $20 a month, Pro at $100 or $200, and Business seats from $20 per user a month on annual billing ($25 monthly).
Where it beats Markty: a launch plan comes back as a finished document. Where it falls short: OpenAI says usage "depends on the model, task size, reasoning effort, and amount of work performed", so a job's cost is not knowable in advance, and it has no native social publishing or marketing knowledge. Buy it if your ChatGPT plan qualifies. Not tested hands-on; the claims are OpenAI's.
4. Fin by Intercom: the customer support hire
Fin is Intercom's AI customer support agent, priced "From $0.99 per Fin outcome" on top of Intercom seats at $29 (Essential), $85 (Advanced) or $132 (Expert) per seat a month. It is the support pick because it is the only product here built and priced around resolving customer conversations; Markty has no support agent, the general agents do not answer your customers, and Sintra's support helper publishes no resolution pricing.
Where it falls short: the bill has two parts, seats plus outcomes, so it scales with ticket volume rather than staying flat, and it lives inside Intercom, which is a commitment in itself. Buy it if inbound support is the bottleneck and you can estimate monthly resolutions well enough to budget. We have not tested Fin; the pricing is from Intercom's page.
5. Lindy: custom agents in Slack
Lindy is an AI teammate that works natively in Slack and automates tasks across the workspace. Pricing is per user: Plus at $29.99 a month with 3,000 credits, Pro at $99.99 with 15,000, Max at $199.99 with 35,000, and Enterprise on custom terms with HIPAA support and a signed BAA. The first week is free when added through Slack.
Where it beats Markty: it works on any process a Slack-first team runs. Where it falls short: it is a build-your-own-agent product, powerful and in need of configuring, so somebody has to design the agents, and it is not sold as a marketing team with a content calendar or AI visibility measurement. Buy it if you have a Slack workspace and a process-minded person to set it up.
6. Sintra: the cheapest bundle of role helpers
Sintra sells 12 named chat-based helpers, including Cassie for support, Soshie for social and Scouty for recruiting, sharing a "Brain AI" that stores brand context. The Sintra X bundle includes all 12 with 250 monthly credits. Pricing on 11 September 2026 was promotional: $48.50 a month on a 1-month term (regular $97), $23.60 on 3 months (regular $59), $15.60 on 12 months (regular $52); single helpers $39 a month, with a 14-day money-back guarantee and no free trial.
Where it beats Markty: breadth of roles and a very low annual price. Where it falls short: the helpers are used mainly through a chat interface, per Sintra's own site, and 250 credits is thin next to Markty's 1,000 on its first rung, though credits are not comparable units across products. Our Markty vs Sintra comparison goes deeper. Buy it for cheap chat help across many tasks.
7. Zapier Agents: automation first, agents second
Zapier Agents adds agents on top of the automation platform many small businesses already run. Zapier itself is Free with 100 tasks a month, Pro from $19.99 a month on annual billing ($29.99 monthly) for 750 tasks, and Team from $69 a month annual. Agents are billed in activities: 400 a month on Free, and 1,500 a month on Pro from about $33.33 a month on annual billing.
Where it beats Markty: it acts across every app Zapier connects, and it has a free tier. Where it falls short: automation first and agent second, not built as a marketing team, and little reason to exist outside a Zapier stack. Buy it if your workflows already run through Zaps.
8. Grok Bot: always-on agents on a cloud computer
Grok Bot is the agent product of SpaceXAI, formerly xAI. It launched in beta on 11 August 2026; on 26 August 2026 SpaceXAI announced it is "now included with all SuperGrok, Cursor Pro, and Cursor Teams plans". Cursor lists Pro at $20 a month with "Grok Bot access", Pro+ at $60 and Ultra at $200. SuperGrok prices are reported only, at about $30, $100 and $300 a month; check x.ai.
Where it beats Markty: bots get a persistent cloud computer with a browser, filesystem and terminal, sign into apps and work while you are offline. Where it falls short: every bot on an account shares that computer, its browser sessions and logins; usage is a weekly allowance, then on-demand billing through Cursor under a monthly limit you set; and at launch SpaceXAI's docs listed macOS, Windows and iPhone only, with Linux, Android and iPad unsupported. Buy it if you already pay for Cursor or SuperGrok. We have not tested it.
9. Artisan Ava: the outbound sales hire
Ava is Artisan's AI sales development representative for outbound campaigns. Pricing is reported and quote-based: an Employee plan of about $600 a month billed annually has been reported, with typical quotes higher and the sale led by Artisan's team, so confirm at artisan.co.
Where it beats Markty: Markty has no outbound sales agent and makes no sales calls, so this is a job it does not attempt. Where it falls short: a few hundred dollars a month on an annual term only pays off where outbound volume already exists, and the price cannot be checked on a page. Buy it if you run outbound at scale and can compare the quote against a human SDR's cost. We have not tested Ava.
10. Devin: the software engineering hire
Devin by Cognition is an autonomous software engineer. Pricing is reported rather than read from the vendor page: third-party summaries put the entry plan at about $20 a month plus metered compute units, and Teams from about $500 a month. Confirm at devin.ai before you budget for it.
Where it beats Markty: Markty writes no code, so any business that ships software has a job here that none of the marketing or operations tools attempt. Where it falls short: compute is metered, so the bill moves with the work, and the output needs a developer to review and merge it. Buy it only if you build your own product and have someone who can judge the code. We have not tested Devin.
What do these AI employees do that Markty does not?
Markty is a marketing team and stops at the edge of marketing. The other nine cover support, sales, engineering and any process that runs through Slack, Zapier or a browser.
Customer support: Fin is priced per resolved conversation. Markty has no support agent.
Outbound sales and calls: Artisan's Ava. Markty's Sales Expert drafts proposals and emails but makes no calls.
Software engineering: Devin. Markty writes no code.
Files, spreadsheets, legal and finance work: Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work.
Driving software with no API: Grok Bot. Markty connects only through each service's own integration.
Which AI employee should a small business hire first?
Hire for the function currently done by nobody. For most small businesses that is marketing, which is why Markty is first; for a business drowning in support tickets it is Fin. A general assistant such as Cowork is the right first hire when the gaps are spread across admin and documents.
Many owners are really choosing between an AI employee and an agency; our Markty vs hiring a marketing agency page sets out that trade-off. Whichever you pick, give it only the accounts it needs.
Disclosure and method
Markty AI publishes this page and sells one of the ten products ranked on it. It is first as the marketing pick; the section above lists what the other nine do that it does not.
The claims rest on vendor pricing and product pages read between 11 and 13 September 2026 (Anthropic, OpenAI's announcement and help centre, Intercom, Lindy, Sintra, Zapier, Cursor), and SpaceXAI's announcements of 11 and 26 August 2026. Artisan, Devin and SuperGrok prices are reported from third parties. We have not tested any competitor hands-on; capability claims are the vendors' own. Markty's figures are from our live pricing page. Prices change; check the current pricing.
